Welcome to the redesigned Placenames Database of Ireland, which incorporates more coordinates, new maps, placename clusters, and a more user-friendly, more easily-navigable responsive interface. A user guide and a description of the main changes are available here. New maps, in Irish and English, have been provided by Ordnance Survey Ireland. We are still correcting minor errors, and your feedback is welcome by email or on Twitter.

Registration is now open for BISA’s annual conference and training event which is taking place in Dublin on 16th and 17th May. This year, BISA is delighted to be teaming up with Fiontar, Dublin City University who are generously hosting the conference.
The conference will explore common themes and challenges. A theme of this year’s event is looking at how the Internet is being used in new and exciting ways to broaden use and appreciation of the wonderful sound archives being preserved in Ireland and Britain. A draft-programme is available here.
Though most are agreed that the Internet is the best way to broaden access to sound archives, it is not always clear as to how best to do this.
Registration fee for the conference, payable on the day, is €30/£25 (registered BISA members) or €36/£30 (non-members) and includes lunch and refreshments. Register today, and we look forward to welcoming you to Dublin!
The Placenames Branch, the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht is supporting this conference.
