How to browse

You can explore Ireland’s placenames by browsing in a certain area on the interactive map.

You can return to the home page at any time by clicking on the logo at the top left of every page.

How to move the map

You can move the map by left-clicking on the mouse and by holding down the button as you drag the map.

How to zoom in and out on the map

There are two ways to zoom in and out on the map:

  • Symbols: You can click on the plus and minus symbols at the top left of the map. Click + to zoom in and click – to zoom out
  • Zoom levels: You can use the quick zoom links by clicking on ‘Quick zoom’ at the bottom left of the map. These will take you directly to the default zoom levels of the counties, the baronies, the civil parishes and the townlands

Additional tools

There are four additional tools available in the toolbar at the bottom of each map:

  • ‘Fullscreen map’: If you click this a fullscreen map will open. To return to the normal map, click on ‘Back to small map’, or click on the site logo in the header to return to the home page.
  • ‘Placenames around me’: If you click this, you will get a list of places that are located near your current location. Further information is available on the page ‘Geolocation’.
  • ‘Where am I?’: If you click this the centre of the map will move to your current location. The site finds out where you are from your browser. The first time you use this feature, your browser should ask you if you want to reveal your location to logainm.ie. Further information is available on the page ‘Geolocation’.
  • Places nearby: If you click this, you will get a list of places that are located near the centre of the current map. The Placename of the day will be at the centre of the map when you first arrive at the homepage. Up to 500 results will be listed in order of proximity, with those locations closest to the centre point listed first, within a radius of 3,000 metres.
